I’m Doug Cockerill, a writer who has been publishing with WordPress for almost twenty years. My vision for this site is to create a step by step record on how to build a website using this platform.
Notice that I said that I am a writer who has been using WordPress for almost twenty years. Please note that I am not claiming to be an expert; if that’s what you’re looking for, you are in the wrong place.
Over the years I have also played around with Joomla and Drupal, two excellent content management systems. I went with WordPress because apart from being very easy to use, its continuing popularity means that there is a lot of support out there.
As a writer, I don’t want to spend hours messing with code.
I want to focus on my writing, not on fixing problems with my sites. For this reason I went for GeneratePress and built a child theme which I have called the Life Theme. It is purposely designed not to be flashy, and to make it comfortable for readers to visit and spend time, without being distracted.
The other theme that I am using at present is Blocksy, which you can see at “Coffee With Allan”. I have gone the same route with that site, using a “child theme”. The great thing about using a child theme is that when your theme is updated, it doesn’t mess with your site.
Articles on this site will include content like choosing a web host, themes, images, whether to use your host’s automatic WordPress setup or do it manually, and which plugins to choose for your site.
